Two Truths and a Lie: 150 Examples (Funny, for Work, Hard to Guess) and How to Play
150 two truths and a lie examples sorted by setting: funny, work-safe, kids, family, hard to guess and Zoom. Plus how to write a lie that fools everyone.
Two truths and a lie is the icebreaker everyone knows and almost nobody plays well. The rules take ten seconds, but the moment it is your turn your brain goes blank, you blurt out "I have a dog" and "I like pizza", and the whole room guesses the lie before you finish the sentence. The game is not the problem. The statements are.
So this is a list of statements. You get 150 ready-made two truths and a lie sets sorted by where you are playing: funny ones for a party, work-safe ones for a team meeting, sets for kids and teens, for couples and family night, hard-to-guess ones, and sets built for Zoom and Teams. Each set marks the lie, so you can steal the structure and swap in your own facts. Before the lists there is a short guide to writing a lie that actually fools people, and after them scoring rules, variants for big groups and a way to play it on the TV with everyone voting on their phone.

How to play two truths and a lie
You need three or more people and about two minutes per player. No cards, no board, no app. The whole game is one question: which of these three things is not true?
1Everyone takes a minute to think of three statements about themselves: two true, one made up. Writing them on a phone or a slip of paper helps, because nerves make people forget their own lie.
2The first player says all three statements out loud, in any order, with the same straight face.
3The group can ask up to three follow-up questions. The player has to answer in character, so the lie needs a backstory.
4Everyone votes at the same time: hold up one, two or three fingers on the count of three. Voting together stops people copying the loudest guesser.
5The player reveals the lie and tells the story behind the strangest truth. That story is the real point of the game.
6Go around the circle until everyone has had a turn.
The one rule that matters
Keep every statement about yourself and keep it kind. Nothing about other people in the room, nothing anyone would regret sharing at work on Monday, and anyone can pass. The game only works if people feel safe to be a little surprising.
How to come up with the best lie
The players who win have one trick: they make the lie boring and the truths surprising. A dramatic lie ("I have been to space camp") stands out, so it gets caught. A dull lie ("I have never broken a bone") sounds exactly like something true, while your real, weird truth ("I once got locked inside a public restroom") looks invented. The group votes for the wildest statement and you win the round.
Here is how to build a set that works:
Start with your strangest true story. That is statement number one, and people will assume it is the lie.
Add one ordinary truth that most people in the room do not know, such as your first job or where you were born.
Write the lie last and make it small, specific and believable: a number, a habit, something you have never done.
Match the length and tone. If two statements are long stories and one is five words, the short one looks suspicious.
Pick a lie you can defend for three follow-up questions. "I speak three languages" dies the moment someone says "say something in the third one".
Avoid lies the room can check. Your coworker who sits next to you knows you cannot whistle.
Say all three at the same speed. People slow down on the lie without noticing, and good guessers listen for it.

Two truths and a lie for work
The best work sets are the ones that start a conversation at the coffee machine a week later.
At work the game has a job to do: help a new team learn something real about each other in ten minutes, without anyone oversharing. These 30 work-safe sets stay on careers, hobbies, travel and harmless office mishaps. Nothing about health, relationships, money or politics, and nothing a manager could hold against anyone.
For a team of eight to twelve, give people two minutes to prepare while coffee is poured, then run the round before the agenda starts. It works best at the start of a project, an onboarding week or a team offsite. More ideas for both are in our team building activities for work and office holiday party games.

For the person running the meeting
Go first and use a slightly embarrassing set. When the manager admits they once walked into the wrong meeting and stayed for 20 minutes, everyone else relaxes. Skip the game for anyone who says pass, and do not keep score at work: guessing is the fun, winning is not.
For kids, teens and family night
Kids love this game from about age seven, as soon as they understand that the point is to fool the grown-ups. The first 20 sets below are written for kids and teens, with school, pets and food instead of jobs. Let younger kids whisper their three statements to an adult first, so they do not reveal the lie with a giggle halfway through.
The next 20 are for couples and family night, where everyone already knows everyone. That makes it harder and funnier: the trick is to use stories the others half remember, or details from before you met. Parents, this is where the kids finally hear about the time Dad got locked out of a running car.

Two truths and a lie on Zoom and Teams
On a video call the follow-up questions are harder and the voting gets messy, so give it a little structure. Ask everyone to send their three statements to the host in a private chat before the call. The host posts them one person at a time, and the team votes with a quick poll or by typing 1, 2 or 3 in the chat at the same moment.
These 14 sets play with things only visible on camera, like backgrounds, pets and the laundry just out of frame, which is half the fun of remote icebreakers.
91. My background right now is not a filter. I am wearing sweatpants under this shirt. I have a second monitor I never use. (Lie: 3)

100. My chair right now is a kitchen stool. I have a list of excuses for turning my camera off. I have a doorbell that rings during every important meeting. (Lie: 2)
101. I once said goodbye and then couldn't find the leave button. I have a separate phone just for work. I have joined a video call from a hospital waiting room. (Lie: 2)
102. I have a mug that says the same thing every day. I once had my dog bark through an entire presentation. I have never used the raise hand button. (Lie: 3)
103. I have been on a video call for more than four hours straight. I work standing up most of the day. I have a photo of my team on my desk. (Lie: 3)
104. I have attended a meeting from my bed. I have never shared the wrong screen. I bought my webcam in the last year. (Lie: 2)
1Before the call: the host collects three statements from each person by private message.
2During the call: the host pastes one set, the person reads it aloud with the camera on.
3Everyone types 1, 2 or 3 in the chat at the count of three.
4The person reveals the lie and has 30 seconds for the story. Next set.
Scoring, big groups and other icebreaker games
Most groups do not keep score, and that is fine. If yours wants a winner, use this: every player who spots the lie gets 1 point, and the storyteller gets 1 point for every person they fooled. Now it pays to write a clever set, not just to guess well.
With more than twelve people the circle gets slow and people drift off. These variants keep a big group moving:
Team rounds: split into tables of four to six. Each table picks one set from its members, and the other tables have to guess whose set it is as well as which statement is the lie.
Name tag version: at a mixer, everyone writes three statements on a name tag and spends 15 minutes finding out other people's lies in conversation.
Lightning round: statements only, no follow-up questions, 30 seconds per player. Good for 20 people in 10 minutes.
Two lies and a truth: flip it. One real statement hidden among two lies is much harder and works well for groups that know each other.
Theme rounds: all statements about childhood, about travel or about food. It stops people from reusing the same three facts every time.
Anonymous bowl: everyone writes a set on paper and drops it in a bowl. You read one aloud and the room guesses both who wrote it and which part is false.
More icebreaker games that work with the same group
If two truths and a lie was a hit, the same group will enjoy Never Have I Ever played for points, Would You Rather with a show of hands, a quick trivia round, and Werewolf, which is the bluffing game at its biggest. You will find more options by group size in our guide to party games for large groups.
Start it on the TV, the rest is in your pocket
When everyone votes on their own phone, nobody copies the loudest guesser.
Two truths and a lie is at its core a bluffing game: you write something believable and hope the room picks it. That same mechanic powers popular party games like Psych and Fibbage, where everyone writes a fake answer to a real question and tries to get the others to vote for it (we compare several of those in games like Jackbox). A bluffing game is coming soon to Buzzin, and it will run the whole round for you: the prompts, the secret voting and the score.
Until then, when the group is warmed up and wants something with a bit more competition, move to the TV. Buzzin is a platform of party games played on the TV you already have. The game starts in the smart TV's browser, on a Chromecast or a laptop over HDMI, or through the BuzzinTV app on LG TVs with webOS 22 or newer, Philips TVs with Titan OS, Android TV, Google TV and Amazon Fire TV. Players scan a QR code on the screen and their phones become buzzers. Nobody installs anything or makes an account. Which setup works on your TV is covered in smart TV party games with phones.
TV Show is a quiz with a voiced host: the question and four answers on the big screen, the fastest correct tap on a phone scores. A room has up to eight players, so a bigger group plays in teams with one phone per team. Frequently asked questions
What are good examples for two truths and a lie?
Good examples pair one strange but true story with one ordinary truth and a small, believable lie. For example: "I once got locked inside a public restroom. My first job was at an ice cream shop. I have never broken a bone." The last one is the lie, and most people will pick the first. Use sets about travel, first jobs, pets and small mishaps, and keep them about yourself.
What is the best lie for two truths and a lie?
The best lie is boring, specific and hard to check: "I have never broken a bone", "I prefer tea to coffee" or "I have never been on a business trip". People expect the lie to be the wildest statement, so a dull lie next to a surprising truth fools the most players. Avoid lies someone can test on the spot, like speaking a language or whistling.
How do you play two truths and a lie at work?
Give everyone two minutes to prepare three statements about work history, hobbies or travel, then go around the table with one set per person and vote at the same time. Keep it to safe topics, with nothing about health, relationships, money or politics, and let anyone pass. The manager going first with a slightly embarrassing set makes it easier for everyone else.
How many people do you need for two truths and a lie?
Three players is the minimum and six to twelve is the sweet spot, which takes about 15 to 25 minutes. With more than twelve people, split into tables or play the lightning round with no follow-up questions, so the game does not drag.
Can you play two truths and a lie online or on a TV?
Yes. On Zoom or Teams, collect the sets by private chat first and let people vote by typing 1, 2 or 3 at the same moment. In a living room, voting on phones keeps the guesses honest, and a TV party game like the TV Show quiz on Buzzin keeps the same group playing afterwards with no controllers to pass around.
