Newlywed Game Questions: 120 Questions for Couples Game Night (Funny, Deep and Would You Rather)

120 Newlywed Game questions in four rounds: warm-up, funny, would you rather and deep. Scoring, printable cards and how to play with 2 to 6 couples.

Download the printable pack (PDF)5 sheets, US Letter and A4 friendly, with answers

Every couple has a version of this moment: you have shared a couch for years, and then it turns out he has no idea what your first concert was, and you are sure his comfort food is mac and cheese when it has been grilled cheese all along. Those small misses are exactly what makes a couples game night work, as long as the questions are good and the rules are simple.

Below are 120 Newlywed Game questions split into four rounds: warm-up, funny, would you rather and deep. You also get a scoring system that keeps the game close, two printable sheets, a format for anything from 2 to 6 couples, a bluffing round that pulls single friends into the game, and a TV version where the phones collect the answers for you.

How to play the Newlywed Game at home

The original show aired on American TV from the 1960s, and the format has barely changed since. It works for one couple at a kitchen table or six couples in a living room:

  1. 1One partner from each couple leaves the room, or puts on headphones and faces the wall.
  2. 2The host reads a question to the partners who stayed. Each writes down how they think their partner will answer.
  3. 3The partners come back. The host reads the same question and they answer out loud, about themselves.
  4. 4Reveal the written answer. A match scores points. If it is close, the partner who was asked about decides, and they should be generous.
  5. 5After 5 to 10 questions, swap: the other partners leave and the ones who answered now guess.

The one rule that saves the night

Ask things a partner can reasonably know, not things they "should" know. Exes, salaries, weight and in-laws are off the list at a party. The goal is a room full of laughter, not a quiet drive home.

Four rounds that get harder

  1. 1

    Warm-up

Facts with one right answer, so every couple starts with a win.

  2. 2

    Funny

No right answer, only yours and your partner's guess.

  3. 3

    Would you rather

Two options and a new question every 15 seconds.

  4. 4

    Deep

Both partners write their own version, a match scores the most.

Scoring that keeps it close

Points exist to give you a final, not to rank anybody's relationship. This system is easy to keep in your head:

  • Warm-up round: 5 points per match.
  • Funny round: 10 points per match.
  • Would you rather: 5 points per match, played fast.
  • Deep round: 15 points per match, or 20 if the answer matches word for word.
  • Bonus: 25 points to any couple that matches on every question in a round.

Why the points go up

Later rounds are worth more, so a couple that stumbles early can still win. That keeps the last round tense instead of a lap of honor for whoever got lucky on question two.

Round 1: how well do you know me questions

A man stands facing the corner of a living room wearing big headphones and covering his ears, while his wife on the sofa whispers an answer to a friend holding a phone and two other couples grin
Headphones and a wall work just as well as sending someone to the kitchen.

Thirty warm-up questions with one right answer. Most couples match on two out of three, and that is the point: you start the night with a win. The first 15 are on a printable sheet so the partner who stays can write straight onto it.

  • What is my favorite pizza topping?
  • What was my childhood dream job?
  • What is my favorite holiday?
  • What sport did I play as a kid?
  • What is my eye color? No looking.
  • What is my favorite dessert?

Round 2: funny Newlywed Game questions

This is where the room gets loud. None of these have a right answer, only your answer, and your partner's guess about it. Sixteen of them are on cut-out cards: put them in a bowl and let each couple draw.

  • What is the strangest food combination I secretly love?
  • What would I do with a free Saturday and no plans?
  • Who takes longer to get ready?
  • What is my signature dance move?
  • What would I name a boat?
  • Which of us is the worse backseat driver?
  • What is the silliest thing we ever argued about?
  • What would I order at a drive-through right now?
  • Who is more likely to cry at a movie?
  • What would I rescue from the fridge in a power cut?
  • Which chore would I pay somebody else to do forever?
  • What is my most dramatic reaction to a minor cold?
  • Who hogs the blanket?
  • What do I sing in the shower?

Round 4: deep questions for couples

End with questions about the two of you. Here both partners write their own version and a match scores. This is the round couples keep arguing about in the car, because memory is very selective.

  • Where was our first date?
  • Who said "I love you" first?
  • What was the first movie we watched together?
  • Who texted first?
  • Where was our first trip together?
  • What was our first real argument about?
  • Which song is "our" song?
  • Who usually apologizes first?
  • What is the best gift we have given each other?
  • Who is the better cook, according to the other one?
  • When did I know this was serious?
  • What is my favorite memory of us?
  • What is one thing I have learned from you?
  • Where do we want to travel together next?
  • What was the first thing we bought together for our home?
  • What was the funniest moment of our first year?
  • Who met the other's family first?
  • What do I think is your best quality?
  • What is one small thing you do that makes my day?
  • Which holiday together was our best one?
  • What is a goal I want us to reach in the next five years?
  • What is my love language?
  • What was I most nervous about when we moved in together?
  • What is one tradition I want us to keep forever?
  • What would I call the best day of our relationship so far?
  • What do I think we are best at as a team?
  • What made me laugh the hardest this year?
  • What is one thing I would like us to do more often?
  • Who is more likely to plan a surprise?
  • What would I say is the secret of us?
The best points in this game never come from a right answer. They come from the story that follows a wrong one.

Couples game night with 2, 4 or 6 couples

Seen from behind, two couples on a big sofa face a TV glowing purple, all holding smartphones, one man raising his hand in celebration
Phones as buzzers means nobody has to guard a stack of answer cards.

The same questions work at any size, but the setup changes:

  • 2 couples: no host needed. Couple A reads the questions to couple B, then swap. Play two rounds each and a sudden-death final.
  • 3 or 4 couples: pick a host who is not playing, or let each couple host one round. Send one partner from every couple out at the same time, so the round moves at the speed of one question, not four.
  • 5 or 6 couples: play in heats. Three couples play rounds 1 and 2, the other three watch and heckle, then swap. The top two couples by points meet in a final with five questions from round 4 at double points.
  • The losers pick the next game. It is the only prize anybody cares about.

Planning a whole night like this

If you want a full game-show evening with a host, rounds and a final, our guide on how to host a game show night at home walks through the setup. For bigger mixed groups, see party games for large groups.

Who Said That? A bluffing round for couples

This last round works well when single friends are in the room too. The host reads a question about one player, say "What is the one food Sam will never eat?". Sam writes the true answer, and everybody else writes a fake one in Sam's style. The host shuffles the slips, reads them all out, and players vote for the real one.

Anyone who finds the truth scores a point, and every fake answer earns its author a point per vote. Sam's partner has the hardest job: they should know the truth, and the whole room is hoping they fall for a bluff. Players of Psych and Fibbage will recognise the idea. A Buzzin game built exactly on it, Who Said That?, is coming soon, with the phones collecting answers and votes and the TV shuffling and revealing them. If your group likes bluffing, two truths and a lie is the no-prep version.

Start it on the TV, the rest is in your pocket

Paper and pens work fine, but with four couples someone always loses a slip and the host stops playing because they are busy adding up points. Buzzin is a party game platform for the TV that takes that job over. The game starts in the smart TV's browser, on a Chromecast or a laptop over HDMI, or through the BuzzinTV app on LG TVs with webOS 22 or newer, Philips TVs with Titan OS, Android TV, Google TV and Amazon Fire TV. Guests scan a QR code on the screen and their phones become buzzers. Nobody installs anything or makes an account. How to connect it step by step is in our guide to smart TV party games with phones.

After the Newlywed Game, TV Show is a natural next step: a quiz with a voiced host, the question and four answers on the big screen, and the fastest correct tap on a phone scores. Play it in couples, one phone per couple, and let each pair argue before they tap. More ideas for the big screen are in our list of the best party games for TV.

If you play it, we would love to hear what you liked and what is worth improving. The conversation happens on our Discord: https://discord.gg/nbVVeWNXFm.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Newlywed Game questions?

The best ones have a clear answer that the partner could realistically know: first date, go-to coffee order, the chore they always dodge, the song they sing in the shower. Mix easy facts, funny guesses, quick would you rather choices and a few deeper questions about your story together. Skip exes, money and weight at a party.

How do you play the Newlywed Game with multiple couples?

One partner from every couple leaves the room at the same time. The host asks the remaining partners to write down how their partner will answer, then brings everyone back and asks the same questions out loud. Matches score points. With five or six couples, play in heats and finish with a final for the top two.

How many questions do you need for a Newlywed Game?

About 10 questions per round and three or four rounds, so 30 to 40 questions in total, fill 45 minutes to an hour for three or four couples. That is why this list has 120: you can pick the ones that fit your group and still have plenty left for a rematch.

What are funny questions for a couples game?

Questions without a right answer get the biggest laughs: what their reality show would be called, which cartoon character they are most like, what they would grab first in a fire, or who hogs the blanket. The fun is in the gap between the guess and the real answer.

Can you play a couples game on the TV with phones?

Yes. You can read the questions from this page and keep answers in phone notes. If you want the TV to run a game and the phones to act as buzzers, start a quiz on Buzzin and play in couples, one phone per couple. Nothing needs to be installed on the phones.
