Every December someone in the family says "let's do a quiz", opens their phone, and reads the first list Google gives them. Twenty minutes later the teenagers have won every movie question, grandpa has won every carol, and nobody is sure whether it was three points or four. Christmas trivia is the easiest game to start and the easiest one to ruin, because a good quiz is not a pile of questions. It is rounds, a pace, a scoreboard and a way to settle a tie.
So here is the whole thing ready to run: 120 Christmas trivia questions and answers, 115 of them in six rounds of rising difficulty (easy, movies, songs, traditions around the world, a kids round and a hard final), plus five tiebreakers for a tied score. Every round is a printable sheet with the answers on it, so the host can print it or read it straight off a tablet. You also get a scoring system, a timing plan for a 90-minute evening and a way to play it on the TV with phones as buzzers. Every answer was checked against sources, and anything with a disputed origin story was left out on purpose.

How to host a Christmas trivia game
One reader, two teams, a pen each. That is the whole setup.
You need one reader, teams of two to five people, paper and a pen per team, and about 90 minutes if you play all six rounds. The reader does not play, so pick the person who likes being in charge more than winning. For a big family, one round per course works well: the easy round with appetizers, the hard final with dessert.
1Split into teams that mix ages. One grandparent, one parent and one kid per team beats "adults against kids" every time, because nobody gets a round they cannot touch.
2Read each question twice, then give 30 seconds. Teams write the answer down instead of shouting it, which keeps the loudest cousin from answering for everyone.
3After every round, teams swap sheets and mark each other while the reader reads the answers. It is faster and it is the funniest part of the evening.
4Keep the score on a big sheet of paper where everyone can see it. A visible scoreboard is what turns a list of questions into a game.
5If two teams are level after round six, go to the tiebreakers at the end of this article: the closest number wins.
Scoring that keeps it close
One point per correct answer in rounds one to five, two points per answer in the hard final. With 100 points in the first five rounds and 30 in the final, a team that falls behind early still has a real shot at the end. Accept answers that are clearly right even if they are not word for word: "the Plaza" counts for the Plaza Hotel.

No reader, no paper, no arguments about the score.
The printed sheets work fine, but they have one flaw: the reader never gets to play. If you want the whole family in the game, including the person who usually holds the list, put the quiz on the TV. Buzzin runs in the smart TV's browser, on a Chromecast or a laptop plugged in over HDMI, and the phones in everyone's pockets become the buzzers. Every setup, including the BuzzinTV app, is explained in smart TV party games with phones.
1Open tv.playbuzzin.com in the TV's browser and start TV Show.
2A room code and a QR code appear on the screen.
3Everyone scans the code or types the room code on their phone, picks a character and is in. Nothing to install, no account.
What changes on the TV
TV Show has a voiced host who reads the questions, shows four answers on the big screen and keeps the score, and the fastest correct tap on a phone wins the most points. Use the sheets from this article for the paper rounds and the TV for the final, or the other way around. If you try it this Christmas, we would love to hear what you liked and what is worth improving on our Discord: https://discord.gg/nbVVeWNXFm.
More Christmas games for the rest of the night
Trivia fills an hour and a half. For the rest of the evening, our guide to family Christmas games has games for three generations in one living room, from table games right after dinner to games with no supplies at all. If more than ten people are coming, the ideas in party games for large groups scale better than a quiz. And if you want to turn the whole evening into a real show with a host, buzzers and a prize, read how to host a game show night at home. The same crowd usually comes back a week later, so our New Year's Eve games have their own trivia rounds too. Throwing the office party too? See our office holiday party games.

Frequently asked questions
What are good Christmas trivia questions?
Good Christmas trivia questions have one clear answer and mix eras, so every generation at the table gets some. Combine easy questions about Santa and reindeer, Christmas movie trivia, songs and carols, traditions from other countries and a few hard history questions. Avoid questions about disputed origin stories, because they end in arguments instead of points.
How many Christmas trivia questions do I need for a party?
Plan on about 10 questions per 10 minutes, including reading, answering and marking. Sixty questions fill a relaxed hour, and the full 120 questions in this article fill about 90 minutes with short breaks between rounds. For a quick game after dinner, one round of 20 is enough.
How do you play a Christmas trivia game in teams?
Split into teams of two to five people with mixed ages, give each team a pen and paper, and let one person read the questions. Teams write answers instead of shouting them, then swap sheets and mark each other after each round. Keep the score where everyone can see it and use a closest-number tiebreaker for a draw.
What is a good Christmas trivia game for kids?
Use short questions about things kids see every December: Santa, reindeer, snowmen, the Grinch, candy canes and Advent calendars. Let the youngest answer out loud while an adult writes, and put kids on mixed teams with grandparents so they are never left behind. The kids round in this article has 20 questions for ages five to ten.
Can you play Christmas trivia on a TV with phones?
Yes. Open tv.playbuzzin.com in the TV's browser, start TV Show, and everyone joins with their phone by scanning the QR code. A voiced host reads the questions and the game keeps the score, so nobody has to be the quizmaster and the whole family can play.
